Exhibition text

An interactive mystery that reinterprets the traditional shadow play ‘Manseokjung Nori’ through contemporary media art and participatory games. Set in Seonjacheong, the fan-making office of the Jeolla provincial government in Jeonju in the late Joseon period, it traces corruption in the making of fans sent as royal tribute. Visitors become a secret royal inspector, gather evidence hidden in hanji paper screens using motion recognition and depth cameras, and work out the culprit. Different findings lead to different endings, offering a new way to experience Jeonju's stories and local cultural assets such as hanji and fans.

Finding evidence in hanji with phone AR

Video is projected from behind a 7m hanji screen, and visitors scan a QR code to open the evidence website, with no app to install. When they point their phone camera at a hanji drawing, AR recognizes it and the culprit's shadow evidence appears on the spot. The evidence they find is collected in a notebook.

Naming the culprit

Your shadow names the culprit

Manseokjung Nori is a traditional shadow play that tells its story with shadows. In the final room, visitors become the hero of that shadow play. The four suspects are projection-mapped onto the wall, and when a visitor stands in front of it, a motion camera follows their movements and casts the inspector's shadow. Point at the culprit and hold still, and the inspector, now your shadow, names the culprit.
